After voicing my concerns to my manager that the amount I was expected to work was jeopardizing my overall happiness and time spent with my spouse, I was told in no uncertain terms that I could either choose to spend more time on my relationship or Square. There was no middle ground. As you can probably guess, I chose the former. I expect that relationship to last much much longer than Square will be around for.

Jack is a curious CEO, though with little experience running a company. I mean, the guy got kicked out of Twitter. He also works two full time jobs, both as CEO of Square and whatever he does at Twitter nowadays. The company culture comes from top down. When your CEO works two full time jobs, lives within a 4 block radius of both of them, doesn’t invest a lot of time in friends, family, or other non-work related relationships, everyone that gets hired below that is expected to do the same. My own social life started to dwindle rapidly in my time there and almost everyone else I spoke to experienced the same.
”

- Square (company): Is Square an unpleasant place to work? - Quora (via iamdanw)

Monmouth in Wales becomes the world’s first...

Monmouth in Wales becomes the world’s first ‘Wikipedia town’

"Writing appears more forgiving because there is no compiler or interpreter catching your its and..."

“Writing appears more forgiving because there is no compiler or interpreter catching your its and it’s issues or reminding you of the rules regarding that or which. Here’s the rub: there is a compiler and it’s fucking brutal. It’s your readers. Your readers are far more critical than the Python interpreter. Not only do they care about syntax, but they also want to learn something, and, perhaps, be entertained while all this learning is going down. The same logic applies to one’s life. For example, ambitious people will reliably tell you that family, or being a mother or father, is the most important thing in their lives. Yet when pressed to choose between racing home to deal with a chaotic pre-bedtime scene and staying another hour at the office to solve a problem, they will usually keep working. It’s these small, everyday decisions that reveal if you’re following a path to being the best possible spouse and parent, the authors write. “If your family matters most to you, when you think about all the choices you’ve made with your time in a week, does your family come out on top?”

- Clay Christensen’s Life Lessons - Businessweek

Slow Club – Our Most Brilliant Friends

Slow Club – Our Most Brilliant Friends

Do we have milk?

Do we have milk?

"A whole industry is stuck on trying to force old metrics on to new channels"

“A whole industry is stuck on trying to force old metrics on to new channels”

- Nike marketing boss attacks ‘old’ approach to social-media
